Francis Marion Intermediate School is a "new" remodeled building. The original structure was built in 1954 and named Washington Elementary, with an addition in 1968. It served the Marion district as an elementary school until it was closed due to declining enrollment. In 1992 it was leased by Linn Academy, now Summit School. As enrollment began to increase, it was opened as a Kindergarten center for MISD in 1998, which it remained for only one year. As the result of a recent bond issue, several new classrooms, a gymnasium and computer lab were added and ready for use by August of 1999. Students who would have attended Vernon Middle School, then a 4-7 building, were the first to walk through the doors of Marion's "newest" building, Francis Marion Intermediate.
