Life Beyond High School

The mission of the Marion Independent School District is to prepare all students with the skills required to enter future adult roles and become effective citizens, productive workers, informed consumers, and responsible family members.  To that end, our district has many programs, events and classes designed to help students decide what their future roles might be.

Starting in the 8th grade, students are required to complete an on-line portfolio using the Choices Explorer program made available through the Iowa College Students Aid Commission and the College Planning Center.  The Choices program contains information about thousands of careers, including the level of education needed, salaries and job outlooks.

As juniors in high school, students are required to attend Transition Night, a job/career showcase that brings in local employers and college representatives to meet with students and their parents.

Juniors from both Linn-Mar High School and Marion High School are required to attend Transition Night, which gives local business and colleges the chance to meet a lot of students and answer questions about their programs.

The Workplace Learning Connection partners with area schools to provide many job-specific experiences for students. Juniors and seniors can sign up for internships and job shadows provided through the Workplace Learning Connection.  This is a good way for students to “try out” a job for a specific period of time to see whether they really are interested in a particular field.

Students get an opportunity to job-shadow at a construction site during the Skilled Trades Day sponsored by the Workplace Learning Connection.

In February, a student from Marion High School, Erick Brouwer, took part in a job shadow with the Surgery Technician crew at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.  Erick was able to tour four surgery rooms and learned about techniques for scrubbing, gowning and gloving for surgery, suturing, positioning patients and circulating duties.

For Marion High School’s college-bound students, financial aid counseling is provided for students and parents looking for ways to pay for college. Representatives from local colleges and universities meet with students either one-on-one or in small groups throughout the year in the Student Services office to answer any questions about the application process or the types of programs offered at each school.

Marion High School guidance counselors, Tom Kettmann and Ann Grant, are available every day to help with questions from both parents and students.
